IMPORTANT
- You must submit transcripts, AP credit, and evaluation materials no later than the end of the first term at UCLA after completing the work, for credit to be applied to HSSEAS degree requirements.
- If you will have 105 or more quarter units of credit you WILL NOT get credit for any course taken at a community college. You may only receive credit for courses completed at 4 year schools.
- HSSEAS students who need or want to
repeat a UCLA course must repeat the course at UCLA
- Of the last 48 units completed for the B.S. degree, 36 must be earned in residence in HSSEAS on this campus.
How to use ASSIST
HSSEAS General Education requirement.
For students following Fall 2005 requirements:
The link below lists courses acceptable for all Foundations areas at a number of community colleges.
http://www.college.ucla.edu/up/counseling/articulations/articulationlist2.htm
If your school isn't on the list, keep going...
For all engineering students:
ASSIST (www.assist.org) has information about the transferability of lower division courses from California community colleges to UC campuses. The codes below tell how courses may be used toward your GE requirement. It is not necessary for a course to be an exact equivalent of a UCLA course to be acceptable as a GE.

Physical and Life Science THINK! Geology would not be a Life Science -- Biology would. |
If you're not sure, submit a
Course
Evaluation Request form.
For Cal State campuses, UCs, or other schools for which SEAS does not maintain an articulation agreement, or if you're not sure whether the course you want will count, submit a
Course
Evaluation Request form.
IMPORTANT EXCEPTION! HSSEAS does not accept courses in Logic or Critical Thinking as GEs
LOWER DIVISION Math, Physics, Chemistry, Programming
For CA community colleges, most of this information is on ASSIST (www.assist.org). NOTE! At many schools a combination of courses is required to satisfy one UCLA course.
For lower division Math, Physics or
Chemistry courses which do not appear on the ASSIST website that you'd
like evaluated, please submit a copy of the course outline or syllabus
(including topics covered and textbook(s) used) to the respective
undergraduate counseling office of the Math, Physics or Chemistry and
Biochemistry department as appropriate.
*Math - go to 6356 Mathematical Sciences Building
*Physics - go to 1-707A Physics and Astronomy Building
*Chemistry - go to 4009 Young Hall
If the course(s) are deemed equivalent, obtain written verification of
this from the department office and submit the verification, along with
your name and student I.D. number, to 6426 Boelter Hall.
Go to ASSIST (www.assist.org)
Under "Select an institution" choose the school you want to attend [continue]
Under "Agreements between two campuses" select UCLA [continue]

For Cal State campuses, UCs, or other schools for which SEAS does not maintain an articulation agreement, submit a
Course
Evaluation Request form, and the results will be emailed to you.
Evaluation of Engineering and Computer Science courses
HSSEAS students who need or want to
repeat a UCLA course must repeat the course at UCLA
If you are near graduation and trying to find a course to complete your degree requirements review the
degree audit procedures FIRST and keep the degree auditor informed about what you are planning.
Click here to see Engineering and Computer Science (and some other) courses that have already been evaluated.
ASSIST (www.assist.org) also includes a few engineering core courses that you may take if you will have fewer than 105 units after completion of the course(s).
If the course you want has never been evaluated, submit a Request for Evaluation, with all the required information and the results will be emailed to you after the evaluation is complete. Allow at least 3 weeks for evaluation of engineering/ CS courses. Evaluations for summer session courses are emailed when completed.
You will need a detailed course syllabus, including (if possible) the name of the text to be used.
You may be able to get this information from the web, or you may need to contact the other school.
Unless it is unusually detailed, the catalog description will not be sufficient for an official evaluation.
Click here for a sample of a detailed course syllabus
The form will provide spaces for you to include the following required information:
- your UCLA student ID number and email address
- the department and course number from the school where the course was taken,
- the name of the school where the course will be taken,
- the URL (website address) of the course
syllabus,
- and the UCLA course you think it might be
equivalent to,
Submit this information in HARD COPY at 6426 Boelter Hall.
Course Evaluation For Newly Admitted Transfer Students
Evaluation deadlines:
There is really no "deadline", per se; however, the sooner you
provide the information, the sooner you will find out the result of
the evaluation. Thus, you will be able to decide upon the
courses you will need to take.
Engineering and Computer Science Courses
Engineering/CS courses from CA community colleges that have already been evaluated may appear on ASSIST (www.assist.org). Click
here to see additional Engineering and Computer Science courses, particularly those from 4 year schools, that have already been evaluated.
If your HSSEAS counselor told you to bring a syllabus for evaluation, or if an Engineering/CS you took has not already been evaluated (according to the links above)...
You will need a course syllabus, including details of the topics covered and (if possible) the name of the text used.
You may be able to get this information from the web, you may have received
it from your instructor, or you may need to contact your previous school.
Unless it is unusually detailed, the catalog description will not be sufficient for an official evaluation.
Click here for a sample of a detailed course syllabus.
For courses to be evaluated, obtain a
Course
Evaluation Request form
from the counter in 6426 Boelter Hall or print one from the web version.
The form will provide spaces for you to include the following required information:
- your UCLA student ID number and email address
- the department and course number from the school where the course was taken,
- the name of the school where the course was taken,
- and the UCLA course you think it might be equivalent to
Submit this information in HARD COPY at 6426 Boelter Hall
Allow at least 3 weeks for evaluation of engineering/CS courses.
General Education Courses
If you attended a California Community college, ASSIST will tell you whether a particular course counts as a GE or not.
If you attended any other school, or if you believe your credit needs to be adjusted, bring a course outline, or catalog description to
Chauncey Isom in 6426 BH.
Credit for writing courses (English 3 and 4W) is determined by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions in 1147 Murphy Hall.
Education Abroad Program
Consult with the EAP office and/or web site about your options (i.e. where can you go to take engineering/CS courses, or GE courses, courses for an approved minor, or courses for your own interest, etc)
When you have a plan and are ready to start the application process:
- Get an Academic Planning Form (and other application materials if appropriate) from EAP.
- Look for courses that you could take while abroad at http://www.eap.ucop.edu/coursefinder/ or the foreign university’s web site and print a detailed course description for each course you want to take.
- Review your requirements and plan courses,
including the UCLA equivalents (or approximate equivalents) for courses you plan to take while on EAP.
If you need assistance, schedule an appointment with your
HSSEAS academic counselor, in
6426 BH.
- Fill out the Academic Planning Form and bring
to your academic counselor in 6426 BH for approval. Please
expect that it will take several days for your counselor to
review, so plan accordingly.
- Submit your detailed course descriptions with a copy of the approved Academic Planning Form to Chauncey Isom in 6426 BH for evaluation. A
Course
Evaluation Request form should be attached to the detailed course outline(s).
- Submit all required paperwork to the EAP Office.
Evaluation of GE courses takes about a week. Evaluation of engineering/CS courses takes at least 3 weeks and in some cases may be tentative. In such cases, final evaluation will be based on course materials provided by you after completing the course. You will get an email when the evaluation is done. While you are abroad direct questions about courses to chauncey@ea.ucla.edu.
NOTE: No more than 5 courses completed while on EAP may be applied to major requirements (i.e. engineering, computer science, technical electives from other departments)
Effective for students studying abroad during 2005-2006 and later
