Academic Attire

Tassels

At UCLA, Bachelor of Science candidates for the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science wear orange tassels on their caps. Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap, and will participate in our dramatic tassel-turning ceremony when their degrees have been conferred. Candidates for the higher degrees wear their tassels on the left side. Master of Science degree candidates wear black tassels; M.Engr. and Engineer degree candidates wear orange tassels; candidates for the Ph.D. degree wear gold tassels.

Cap

The cap is worn with the long point of the shell to the rear.

Hood

The hood worn by those graduates receiving M.S., M.Engr. and Engineer degrees hangs to the rear from the neck and may be fastened to the wearer's apparel in front by a cord or elastic band. To avoid wearing the hood inside out, care should be taken that the velvet facing of the hood is visible under the chin and lies flat over the shoulders. Ph.D. graduates should carry their hoods until they are hooded on stage.

Hood color

The title of the degree to be awarded (not the subject studied) governs the color of the velvet facing. For example, the Master of Science degree in Engineering requires the color of the velvet to correspond to the title of the degree (Science) rather than the subject studied (Engineering). Therefore, the color of the facing will be golden yellow, and not orange. A candidate for the degree of M.Engr. or Engineer wears orange. A doctor of Philosophy, no matter what the field of study, wears dark blue to correspond with the title of the degree.

Under your gown

Keep it light. Lightweight dresses, skirts or pants and blouses for women and lightweight shirts and slacks for men are recommended; a tie is optional.
