2009-2010 Outstanding Bachelor of Science Award
Description/Criteria: This award is limited to undergraduate students who will complete their B.S. degree in the
2009-2010 academic year (Summer 2009, Fall 2009, Winter 2010, or Spring
2010 degree completion).
Criteria may include items such as GPA, creativity, research, and community service.
Award: Plaque and monetary
award (monetary award subject to fund verification)
There will be NO Schoolwide nomination process for Outstanding Master of Science and Outstanding Doctor of Philosophy Awards. Check with your academic department to find out if there will be department selection.
A *letter nominating student for award, outlining how student meets the criteria for award, and any supporting documentation (such as papers, articles, etc.) should be forwarded to
Leah Eberhardt, Office of Academic & Student Affairs, 6426 Boelter Hall.
*Nominations by faculty, staff and others are strongly encouraged; however, self nominations will be considered. Selection will be made by the HSSEAS Awards and Honors Committee.
2009-2010 Russell R. O'Neill Distinguished Service Award
Description/Criteria: An award in recognition of outstanding contributions to the undergraduate student body, student organizations, the School, and to the advancement of the undergraduate engineering program through service and participation in extracurricular activities.

monetary award (monetary award subject to fund verification)
A letter nominating student for award, outlining how student meets the criteria for award, and any supporting documentation (such as articles, resume etc.) must be must be submitted to
Leah Eberhardt, Office of Academic & Student Affairs, 6426 Boelter Hall. Nominations by faculty, staff, peers and others are strongly encouraged; however, self nominations will be considered. Selection will be made by the R.R. O'Neill Awards Committee.
2009-2010 Harry M. Showman Prize
Description/Criteria: One graduate level AND one undergraduate level
award will be considered. Recipients need not be degree candidates.
Awarded to those who most effectively communicate the achievements, research, results or social significance of any aspect of engineering to a student audience, the engineering professions, or the general public.
Primary consideration will be given to written articles or editorial services for an engineering student publication, but the award may also be conferred for meritorious contributions in other areas of communication.

2009-2010 Engineering Achievement Award for Student Welfare
Description/Criteria: Awarded to undergraduate and graduate engineering students (recipients need not be degree candidates) who have made outstanding contributions to student welfare through participation in extracurricular activities and who have given outstanding service to the campus community.

HSSEAS 2010 Commencement Student Speaker
One student will be selected to represent all degree recipients at the
2010 HSSEAS COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY
Students interested in being the Student Speaker should:
If a *HSSEAS UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT:
Be in good academic standing and a candidate for the B.S. DEGREE to be awarded in June
2010
(Spring 10) or have been awarded a B.S. DEGREE in September 2009
(Summer 09), December 2009 (Fall 09) or March 2010 (Winter10).
If a *HSSEAS GRADUATE STUDENT:
Be in good academic standing and a candidate for a GRADUATE DEGREE (M.S., Engr., Ph.D.) earned or projected between July
2009 and June 2010.
*SU10 or F10 degree candidates, who per Special Request approval are given permission to take part in the
2010 Ceremony, are eligible to apply to be Student Speaker
Have a record of University, Community, or Student Services
Prepare an acceptable speech 3 to 5 minutes in length on a theme related to
Commencement/Graduation (finalists will be required to give an oral presentation of their speech)
Submit to Leah Eberhardt, 6426 BH, a letter of application. The letter of application should be addressed to the Student Speaker Selection Committee, which should contain a brief essay about the applicant (include major, degree to be awarded, plans after degree completion. Include an address, local telephone number, and E-mail address where you can be contacted.)
and an outline of your speech.
National Anthem
Vocalist(s) or Instrumentalist(s)
A student(s) *may be selected to perform the National Anthem at the
Commencement
Ceremony. If you are interested in performing the National Anthem, you should:
Be a HSSEAS student in good academic standing. Applicant need not be a degree candidate.
As application, prepare an audition tape and letter of introduction about yourself and submit to
Leah Eberhardt, 6426 BH.
The letter of application should be addressed to the Student Vocalist Selection Committee, and include a brief essay about the applicant (include major, degree expected term and include an address, local telephone number, and e-mail address where you can be contacted.)
*selection for National Anthem performer may be opened to outside, non-student applicants.
